Phalera bucephala  (Linnaeus, 1758)

Buff-tip

A large, striking moth that favours open woodland, hedgerows and gardens. It flies from May to July and was first recorded on South Uist in 2011 with subsequent records from Harris and Barra. The larval food-plants are, birches (Betula spp.), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), alder (Alnus glutinosa), hazel (Corylus avellana), willows (Salix spp.) and others. Cateprillars were found on South Uist in 2014.
