Although suitable habitat is widespread, this species was not recorded in the Outer Hebrides until 2019. A distinctive moth which flies in the evening from April to August. The larvae are aquatic, feeding on bur-reeds, (Sparganium spp.) and other water plants, living within transportable case made from plant material, similar to caddis fly larvae.
