Eupithecia subumbrata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Shaded Pug

Another new species for the Outer Hebrides when a male was found in a light trap on South Uist in June 2025. The species has made a striking range expansion in recent years. Strangely, it was not even mentioned as present in Scotland in the second edition of Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland (2009) but was stated as locally common in parts of western Scotland in British and Irish Pug Moths (2003). The larvae feed on a wide range of flowers which includes common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) and field scabious (Knautia arvensis).
